Security Advice 2013
Further to two incidents in January 2012, that closed Dover and Ramsgate Ports in Kent for several hours, please read the following sent to us for publication from HM Revenue and Customs.
It is strongly advised that you DO NOT import any militaria consisting of grenades, mortar bombs, shells, mines, fuzes and rockets even if you believe them to be inert and totally free of explosive or residue.
This is because there is no recognised standard in the UK whereby such items can be definitively classified as inert and thus do not represent an explosive risk.
In the interest of public safety, UK authorities are instructed that where they have the slightest doubt over the condition of any item they must consider it ‘live’. Isolating the item or the vehicle in which it is being carried can result in the evacuation or closure of port/transit facilities, roads and other public areas. These precautions remain in place until the items have been made or declared safe by the competent UK military authority.
In these circumstances you would be liable to detention until the status of all items found in your possession and giving rise to concern could be ascertained. Any breach over the condition of any item could result in your prosecution and you may be further liable to considerable damages for any disruption caused as a result of your actions.
Finally your travel operator would be informed that you may have been in breach of their conditions of carriage and thus they may elect not to carry you in future.
Additionally please be advised that in many countries the removal of battlefield relics is an offence and may also constitute an offence under UK law.
